Chicago White Sox ace Lucas Giolito successfully checked that box with a near-perfect outing against the Pirates last night, only allowing one baserunner via walk in Chicago’s 4-0 win. Here’s what you should know about Giolito’s performance:

  • The history: It’s the first no-hitter of Giolito’s career and the 304th in MLB history. It’s the first no-hitter from a White Sox pitcher since 2012 and the 19th in franchise history
  • Giolito’s dominance: Giolito’s stuff was outstanding and he was missing bats all night. He struck out 13 (the most Ks ever in a White Sox no-hitter) and got six groundball outs and five flyball outs. He got 30 swing-and-miss strikes
  • The final out: Giolito had a very close call with the final batter of the game, as a liner was hit to right field with an exit velocity of over 102 MPH. It looked like it might be a base hit off the bat, but Adam Engel made a nice snag to seal the deal
  • Good signs: After a tough start to the season, Giolito has been dominant in each of his past two starts… though it’s worth noting that those starts have come against the Tigers and Pirates. Still, a no-hitter is a no-hitter.

Giolito’s career arc sure has been something to this point. A few years ago he was one of the worst pitchers in baseball with the league’s most walks and highest ERA among qualified starters, and then he turned it around and became an All-Star last year. Now, he’s an ace on a young, exciting team that’s as hot as any club in baseball right now. And now he’s got his place in MLB history with a no-hitter. That’s what we call growth!
