Nowadays, daily fantasy sports (DFS) are going to be more and more popular among online casinos. A Canadian specialist urges lottery operators to add this new gaming product to their offer.
Jeffrey Derevensky, a Professor from McGill University, encourages provincial lottery operators to introduce daily fantasy sports as he believes it is the future. DFS is an accelerated variant of traditional fantasy sports that are conducted over short-term periods. Adding this growing gaming product could be a great opportunity to spread operators’ wings.
In an interview for CBC News, Derevensky said: “When you’re putting money down to win money and there’s a probability that you’re not going to win money, then that’s gambling.” His main argument is to consider DFS as an online game, therefore it would be easy to define this kind of activity as gambling and regulate its properly by some special law which makes them safer and more reliable to players. It is proved that in many casino reviews for Canadians, DFS is appearing more often.
One of Canadian states, Ottawa, is not eager to follow DFS trend. In the past, there was a little interest to legalise DFS industry as only sites with servers in Canada were taken into consideration. It could be a difficult issue to solve as most of DFS operators are coming from abroad.
The British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC) has seen this product as a perfect solution for fast-growing gambling industry and as a great potential to develop lots of online casinos even if they don’t have plans to introduce DFS right now. James Chisholm, DraftKings’s director of public affairs, added: “We have competition everywhere. That’s what drives us. No one has a greater incentive to ensure people who are playing our game are who they say they are than we do.”
